Gator Causes Alarm At Rollover

By Ed Snyder/Outdoors
Rollover Pass, Gilchrist, TX.
Last week anglers lined up one early morning to fish for “whatever”. After their rods were placed in holders, awaiting the “whatever” bites, the conversation was warming up with the previous days run of “whatevers”. Just then, one angler stopped talking, pointed to what looked like a swimming log and asked the question, “What is that? A gator!?”

Sure enough, on spotting the moving log it looked like, and eventually proved to be an Alligator. As it drew nearer we estimated it to be a 10 footer. This gator was a male with moss growing on its back.

Excited to see this rather large alligator swimming in Rollover Pass, anglers pulled their cameras out to record this unusual event. But it wasn’t all that unusual as this time of year gators often cross over to the Gulf to rid themselves of the pests that accumulated on their rugged bodies during the year.

After about 2 weeks in saltwater the pests are eliminated and the gators eventually make their way back to the swamps. What was unusual though was that this gator decided not to wait till night and came though the cut at daylight. The only worry here would be to those that wade the surf to fish! I, for one would NOT appreciate having a 10 ft gator come up on me while I was neck deep in saltwater. Can you just imagine?!

10 ft gator passing through the pass to reach the Gulf

Imagine, having a 10 ft gator come up on you while neck deep in the surf...DaDum, DaDum, DaDum!!

Surf anglers beware
