GBF Bike Around the Bay

bikebay_0More than 1,100 riders registered for the annual 2-day Bike Around the Bay held this past weekend. Cyclists began their ride in Baytown on Saturday morning taking a scenic route that passes by the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, through High Island, and down Bolivar Peninsula. Cyclists ride the Bolivar Ferry to Galveston Island, where they enjoy dinner and hospitality at Moody Gardens Hotel.

Riders waiting for the ferry were greeted by volunteers from Samson Energy who offered sandwiches, fruit, snacks, and water.

The second day brings riders over the Galveston Causeway, through Texas City along the Texas City levee, through the bayside towns of Kemah and Seabrook, and over the Fred Hartman Bridge. In addition to the full, 170-mile route around Galveston Bay, cyclists have the option of registering for a one-day, 94-mile route with an additional option of cycling a further six mile loop on Bolivar Peninsula to make the first day a century ride.

The proceeds benefit Galveston Bay Foundation (“GBF”) projects that preserve wetlands, protect natural habitat, and enhance the water quality of the bay for present users and for posterity. Further information on the event can be found at www.bikearoundthebay.org.
