GULFWAY MOTEL and RESTAURANT (Not just for the birds)

By Linda Elissalde
The Bolivar Peninsula is internationally famous for its bird population. People travel from all over the world in springtime to view our splendid selections of Aves. High Island even featured in THE BIG YEAR, a comedic take on a fictional contest to see who could find the most birds in one year. Many birders choose to nest at Gulfway Motel on HWY 124. This delightful place is open all year round.

Several Crystal Beach residents waited out cold weather last winter when water pipes were freezing and electricity lines broke down. Our son Daniel stayed there for a week when he came to visit during Thanksgiving holidays. He declared it to be a fine lodging. Gulfway offers spic and span rooms, good internet access, TV with ROKU, and outstanding food in an adjoining restaurant. Supervisor Jin and family are excellent caretakers. This family business migrated from China to Canada before settling in High Island.

We picked Daniel up on Friday after Thanksgiving and shared the joy of meeting Jin and other family members. Fifth grade son Gavin entertained us by sharing his art work augmented with numerous “ Why Did” riddles. We stayed for lunch. WOW! The menu offers myriad selections. Forty-five are different Chinese delights. There are also quite a few classic American staples. Daniel declared that he had the best hamburger in his whole life while staying at Gulfway. Pizza is another highlight. You can specify exactly what you want on your choices. The chef cooks everything fresh right in the Grill area. Charming Jin is an excellent server. She checked right on time when we needed drink refills or more scrumptious sauce. (Jin’s family worried about Daniel on Thanksgiving Day so they brought an entire dinner to his room as a gift.)

While the birders are away, you might want to make a stop in High Island for breakfast, lunch or dinner. This Peninsula could become famous for more than its birds. A little gem, Gulfway Motel and Restaurant, might become internationally famous also.
