Happy Thanksgiving

Several years ago, we visited the rock – you know the one where the pilgrims landed. It was very small and encased by cement. That way we tourist would not take any more of that very special rock. Somewhere there is a picture of a pilgrim standing atop this rock and that is what I want to remember. We also visited a replica of the ship these very brave people came to this land in and we visited a replica of a town these brave people established. This has left a very lasting impression on me of this beautiful country.

As a child, we celebrated this day a little different than most people, you see my parents met on Thanksgiving night at a dance in downtown Houston. My parents were married in April, 1931, but Daddy always considered Thanksgiving as their anniversary. He thought they should go out to dinner to celebrate. Way back then, very few places were open for business, so Daddy had to stay home, greet family and perform the most important job. Of course that was grate the coconut for Ambrosia – not his favorite job. By the time I came around, Daddy had time to enjoy the fact that it was party time and he did love a party. Mom and Dad loved to dance just like RR and I, even in the kitchen on Thanksgiving.

Time goes by, and my sister started hosting the day of food and family. We don’t have a large family and very few cousins, but just enough to enjoy the time without too many conflicts. As everyone knows, sometimes this can get in the way of a very special time with family.

Then, Mom and Dad moved to the farm in Blanco and we had a Great Big kitchen and boy did we have fun preparing dinner. But wait! There is more! Our tradition for Friday after Thanksgiving was to make Fruitcakes and Fruitcake cookies. I know most people make fun of this cake, but the memories I have with every bite of a Fruitcake cookie makes my heart sing. You must admit, anything made with love, laughter, and don’t forget Whisky, has got to be good!

Enjoy this time with friends and family. Love to all of you, stay safe.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!
