I guess we just can’t stay away from the water

A vacation away from the beach on the Gulf of Mexico takes us to yet another coast – the Monterey Peninsula on the Pacific Ocean. We all gathered at the Bay for our excursion out into the Pacific for a much-anticipated Whale Watching trip. The further out we ventured, the colder it got, the more the boat rocked. Thank goodness for a little Dramamine. Along the way, we saw several otters and sea lions. We happened upon a massive pod of dolphins, many more than I’ve ever seen at one time together. They swam along with our boat just barely under the water. Captain Chris warned us we may see a whale or two as he motored us out farther and farther, not to get anxious, we’d see plenty of whales. Kayakers were out in the wide open, along with other big boats – catamarans and sail boats.

All of a sudden, we heard a swoosh and saw a spout of water spraying up in the air. The whales were all around us, swimming toward our boat, their huge majestic bodies barreling through the water and their massive tails waving up in the air as they dipped back down into the water, scooping up more anchovies (yum). The Captain remarked on the stupidity of the kayakers, who paid no attention to him. Captain Chris reminded me a bit of Carlton the Doorman. With a deadpan voice, no excitement, “Sometimes these whales act up a bit, jumping up in the air – imagine 50 tons of whale landing smack dab in the middle of your kayak.”

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
