MirrOlure Field Tester

williamsBy Capt. Mike Williams
After I had MirrOlure make the first factory made 51M series lure and was on board as field tester, I decided to do what they wanted me to do, which was design and field test lures; then see if that lure would take trout in the surf and bays of the Galveston Bay complex. One cold winter night I had to go the store for my wife…it was late and nobody was in this Walgreens drug store. As I was leaving, I noticed about eye level on this rack was the pinkest tooth brush I had ever seen. I took the tooth brush off the shelf and thought, my goodness, what a great color for a trout plug. So I bought the tooth bush and took it home. The next morning, I went to the post office and sent that tooth brush to MirrOlure and told them if they could duplicate that color on a lure, it would be one of the hottest trout lures ever made. About a week later, I got a letter back from MirrOlure and they said that they were very sorry and could not make a lure of that clear hot pink color. They went on to say that their reputation had evoled from the famous MirrOlure flash which came off the mirrors or flash inside the sides of the lure. I sent them a return letter and said “you will still have your famous MirrOlure flash, the only change is instead of the flash being clear, it will be clear pink. About 2 weeks later I received the first clear pink 51M series MirrOlures ever made, numberrd this lure 51M PF; P stood for pink and F stood for flash or flame series. Two years later, the new PF color was one the hottest trout colors in the United States and was deadly on the trout in our waters -still is. I went back to the drug store and bought 2 more tooth brushes, one was clear hot chartreuse and the other was clear hot orange; both lures were manufactured and went online. The 51MCF was hot in east bay in the eighties and was used later as the “base color” that other lures would be made from. Then finally came the clear red. I have not looked lately, but most of the clear color lures are still offered, perhaps not all.
