MirrOlure testing

williamsBy Capt. Mike Williams
When I was a Mirrolure field tester, my job was to design and field test different lures. In the sixties and seventies, that company already had lures that worked well in our bays and surfs. In that time period, two of my favorite go-to lures was the “legendary classic” 52M28 and the “trophy trout killer” 52 MSHP. I came on board with Mirrolure in 1980, and the first thing I did was ask if they could make a 52M with a factory line in the nose. Before, we had the modify a 52M by taking the line tie out of the head then screw it into nose. About a month later, I received a package in the mail; in that package was the first factory made 51M series Mirrolures ever made.

I was always trying different lures and colors to see which color patterns work the best. One day, I was fishing the surf near the pass and was having real good luck with the 51M28 (red back – gold sides – yellow belly) and the 51M SHP (pink back – silver side – pink belly). I took one of the 51M SHP, taped the silver side and the pink back and sprayed the bottom to a high bright yellow. Now i had a lure that had a pink back, silver side and yellow belly. I field tested that lure for about a year and half. The prototype lure worked well in all bays, and was deadly on big trout in the surf. I sent my report to Mirrolure and the lure was made; it came on line in the early eighties with the number 51M 704. 704Shortly after that, this lure was tagged the “Texas Chicken”, and is still in the starting lineup on the Mirrolure charts, and perhaps the best all around Mirrolure ever made for big trout in a Texas green surf. The 704 comes in many series for different types on fishing: 52M 704 for boat fishing, 51M 704 for wading the surf and bay flats, 60M 704 for fishing deeper waters with currents, 68M 704 for tarpon and fishing places with stronger currents, like the end of a jetty. The 60M 704 works well in the currents of Rollover Pass. The 60M has more weight, therefore sinks a little faster than the 52M or 51M. (January 1, 2015)

  2. THE TEXAS CHICKEN is a great lure for the Galveston Bay Complex and surf .UNLIKE some Mirrolures ,this lure works 365 days a year .I think it caught the biggest trout on the Upper Texas Coast in the STAR fishing contest in 2013…IT’S the kinda lure you want to give your son for Christmas ,knowing that if he throws it and does not catch trout ,he just in the wrong place at the wrong time OR them trout just ain’t eaten …….like i said ,ONE OF THE BEST ,MAY BE THE BEST MIRROLURE EVER MADE FOR OUR WATERS
