Missed It!

Georgia's Sand BucketBy Georgia Osten
We went for our “monthly” trip into Galveston for Date Night. We had a reservation planned for later in the week, but when I found out I had Monday off, we decided to go on Sunday night. Later today, I found out next week is Galveston Restaurant Week. We missed it, oh well, maybe next time! Sunday was a bit of a lazy day, we both kind of sat around on our computers and leisurely decided to get ready to leave around 2 in the afternoon. Check in wasn’t until around 4 and we were afraid it was too cold to wander around the Strand area for too long. WRONG! When we got there, we were able to check in, stashed our stuff, and set out for a walk along all the shops. There’s always a birthday in our family to shop for, and so we did. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people out and about enjoying the day.

After shopping, we set off for the Roof Top Bar, but it was closed due to high winds. Quite okay with us, we found a couple of seats at the bar downstairs and had our favorite Tremont Old Fashioned. As always, we struck up a conversation with a couple of guys at the bar, it’s so interesting meeting new folks. They were quite outgoing, as we’ve found with practically anyone we happen to meet. We discussed places to eat in the Strand area, they didn’t like some we like, and visa versa. They knew about Bolivar, so we had a delightful conversation about Rollover. They were certain Bolivar was once an island, but we didn’t get into it with them, much too much Know It All facts we have stored up in our own Noggins. They’d never heard of Stingaree, so we assured them IT was the place to go. Of course, they knew of Tiki and raved and raved!

Anyway, we took them up on one of their suggestions for dinner last night. MISTAKE! Oh well, we’ll always try new things, but it takes a lot of panache for us to latch on to something. This place was definitely not our favorite, in fact, we’ll not ever go there again. Some places, we’ve given another chance, and then, eventually decide not to ever go back. Let’s face it, we have maybe a handful of restaurants we like, and we’ll keep going there dang it!

We always go to Fisherman’s Wharf for dessert. We sit at the bar and share a piece of key lime pie and have coffee. Last night, Chasen, the bartender, saw us come in, immediately recognized us and disappeared. He returned with two steaming cups of freshly made coffee. We don’t always see the same faces, but when we do, oh what a welcoming feeling. Just like when we returned to the Tremont bar before going up to our room, and there was the bartender we met from a month or so ago.

It’s kind of like CHEERS, Where Everybody Knows Your Name, and They’re Always Glad You Came.
