Mom’s Room

Last week I spent several days at the farm with my sister and nephew. Even though Dolores and I were raised in the Heights of Houston, going to the farm feels like going home. Many rooms at the farm have changed as it is now Dolores’ home. The kitchen is the biggest room in the house. When it was built, there were only two rooms and a very small bath. All of these rooms were made of limestone and about 16″ thick. As years went by, the original owners added on, the den and the front bedroom are all thick paneling.

Mom and Dad’s room was the small bedroom just off the kitchen, it had the best breezes with six windows, three to the south and three on the east side. When Mom passed at the age of 96, we did very little to the room. About a year later, as Dolores and I were cleaning out sewing patterns, we finally decided how to decorate her room. We used the only wall that was not stone and framed the patterns from our favorite dresses that Mom had made us over the years. This is the room I sleep in when I visit and I never get tired of looking at the pictures and remembering.

If you are close to my age, you will recognize the styles and the ages of the patterns. Some are back in style for a second or third time. Have a great week.
