My Christmas Story

By Charlotte Byus
Last Thursday was food pantry day at Second Going and many people come into the store and pantry – my busiest day. A man and woman came in for their groceries, the man took all the money he had in his pocket and gave it to the woman. “Dear, next week is Christmas and your birthday, go into the store and find you a pretty.” The woman came to the counter with one dollar bills and some change in her hand and asked for assistance. A customer who shops weekly in the store was at the counter with me when the woman came up. Her statement was this, “I have a few dollars and would like some help picking out something for Christmas and my birthday, I am not a pretty lady but I saw you two standing there and I knew you could help me.”

We got busy. The woman was in very large sweat pants and a shirt, 3 sizes too big for her. We found a nice black sweater, a pretty long-sleeved peach sweater to go under and a pair of jeans that fit her. She tried everything on and was very happy with the choices. She paid for the jeans and I purchased the long-sleeved sweater.
When she was at the register to check out, she was so proud of her new outfit and a really big smile made her look even more beautiful.

As I was bagging her items, she noticed a Bible that had been placed on the counter and asked how much it was? I knew she did not have any more money so I said “Merry Christmas” and handed her the Bible. She hugged the bible and cried, “I grew up on the Bible and have not had one for many years, you have no idea how much this means to me.” With a big hug, she said “Thank you so much. Would you write your name in it for me?” So I did. I wrote
