Near Ace Gives Porteous Rare Win in First February Sunday Scramble

By Mike VanZandt
One shot separated Howard Porteous and his partner from the field Sunday when he teed off on the 128 yard third hole. Needing a par to win and avoid a three team playoff, Porteous stuck his tee shot to eight inches for a gimme birdie and a two stroke win. The clutch shot by Howard disappointed construction magnate Mike Comeaux and Seaside Lumber Executive Dabney Harrison and Shannon O’Brien and Joe Corona.

Howard also won the closest to the hole money in the weekly scramble. Others playing were Dewey Jones and Jason Pettit. Octogenarian Jones (also known as “El Hombre Sin Miedo” or the Man Without Fear) has been pounding the driver lately to go with his always deadly short game. In last place were head golf pro Mike Mitchell and super-putting Charlie Brannon. Mitchell has returned the driver he calls “Blue Thunder” to his bag and has been smashing it long distances even if often somewhat crooked.

Following the Sunday Scramble, Aaron Comeaux and Alan Lind joined the skins game with Dabney Harrison, Mike Comeaux, Shannon O’Brien, Mike Mitchell, Dewey Jones, Howard Porteous and your golf writer. To win a skin, you have to beat all the rest of the players competing by at least one shot on any particular hole. Divide the prize money by the number of skins earned to determine the payout. Nine players put up $10 each and head golf pro Mike Mitchell birdied number 6 for one $30 skin and Mike VanZandt picked up two skins and $60.00. VanZandt had the only par on hole number 7 and chipped in from off the green for a birdie on the difficult eighth hole. Congratulations to Porteous, Mitchell, and yours truly who took home all the sheckles Sunday morning and afternoon.

Quelling peninsula gossip, Shannon O’Brien has not given daughter Holly his car as a graduation present. Holly is rumored to be holding out for something a little sportier than the four dour BMW Shannon drives. Good luck Holly!
