One way or another

We all knew him one way or another. Many of us were lucky enough to have shook his hand or had him listen to our story about our homes here after Ike. He was so approachable, and Mrs. Bush too. Many years ago, our Brown & Root volunteer group signed up to work MD Anderson Children’s Art Project. This program was just starting, we were in a small office on the second floor of the Prudential Building on Fannin Street. After several years, a group of the ladies of the Houston Junior League came up with a parade in the medical center to show off the cards these children had drawn.

Large paintings of the cards were made and volunteers were invited to carry the paintings through the center. Sometimes if the children were well enough, they would ride in convertibles behind the paintings. My favorite almost every year was Beth’s. She always drew angels for her cards. I guess Beth knew more than most of us wanted to admit to ourselves. One year, I was fortunate to meet President and Mrs. Bush. We shook hands and they thanked me for carrying this beautiful Angel. I tried to explain that I was just a volunteer who loved Beth’s work and they shared with me how much it meant to them to see this Angel. You see, unbeknownst to me, Beth’s angel looked a lot like Robin Bush. With the gripping of hands and tears in our eyes we said good-by.

When Mrs. Bush passed, my tears were for her finally having Robin back in her arms. This past week, my tears have been for us as a nation. I know better, but I pray that just a few words have soaked into this nation, and maybe for the rest of this season, we can practice a little kindness and a little love for each other. One day at a time.

Just as President Bush did, share your coat with a stranger, share your food with someone who is hungry, and share your arms for someone who needs a hug.

Peace be with You and Yours.
