Playground Fun

The equipment arrived and the long awaited installation of the Bolivar Playground Community Build was set in place at Bolivar Park in Port Bolivar, with the help of community volunteers. One group drove all the way from Vidor to participate. A “community build” is a way to save on installation costs in order to maximize money spent on equipment. William Comeaux, Galveston County Road & Bridge Manager, was involved in the purchase of the equipment and organized the Community Build.

Using FEMA funds, Galveston County purchased the equipment from fun abounds, a Sugar Land company. By 8am, over 30 volunteers showed up and were met with a myriad of poles, slides, swings, and piles of nuts and bolts. Under the guidance of Leigh Walden – owner of fun abounds and Tom Driscoll of Premier Outdoor Installation, the playground started to take shape. The various parts were bolted together, leveled, and cemented in the ground.

By lunchtime, most of the installation was complete with only a couple of holes left to cement. County Commissioner Darrell Apffel dropped by to say thanks to the volunteers as everyone took a break for lunch provided by the Lions Club. After the lunch break, the 12” border was installed around the playground and filled with over 200 cubic yards of mulch. The finished product now stands tall attracting the kids of the Bolivar community.

The community build of the Bolivar Playground is all thanks to Galveston County, fun abounds, Premier Outdoor Installations, and all the volunteers for providing a play area to be enjoyed for many years to come.
