Peninsula Sports Park is open for another season. This second season is sure to bring happiness, cheers, and many memories. Saturday’s opening was welcomed with sunny skies and grandstands full of fans. The field was in perfect condition with a brand new permanent snack bar and picnic tables. The festivities started at 10:00 am with a T-Ball match between the Hurricanes and Dolphins. The Sluggers Division then featured a game between the Bull Reds and Pirates. At noon, League Commissioner Leslie Lowe introduced all the teams for this season. As each team lined the field with their coaches and sponsors, the Mermaids Cheer Squad performed several cheers to get the crowd in the spirit. Haley Comeaux sang the National Anthem and the full slate of afternoon games began. Delino’s Bolivar Boys played the Winnie in an East Chambers League matchup, followed by a Sluggers division game between the Tsunamis played the Bull Reds. Then two Majors Division games were played, featuring the Cardinals against the Bad News Beach Bums, and the Stingrays against the Cardinals.
All day long, in addition to baseball, delicious BBQ sandwiches and burgers, homemade baked goods, and snow cones by Snowie were served. There was a face painter, raffle items, and a 50/50 cash pot to help kick off the new season. And finally at dark, a fantastic fireworks display shot into the sky, donated and performed by Randy Martin of Ray’s Fireworks. What an awesome opening day ceremony! Come out to see a game and support our future pros.
