Public Notice for Coastal Texas Protection and Restoration Study

corps_0The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) intends to prepare a Draft Integrated Feasibility Report and Environmental Impact Statement for the Coastal Texas Protection and Restoration Study. A notice of intent was published in the Federal Register, Vol. 81, No. 62, on Thursday, March 31, 2016. This study will identify and evaluate the feasibility of developing a comprehensive plan for flood damage reduction, hurricane and storm risk reduction, and ecosystem restoration for the coastal areas of the state of Texas. The study will focus on providing for the protection, conservation, and restoration of wetlands, barrier islands, shorelines, and related lands and features that protect critical resources, habitat, and infrastructure from the impacts of coastal storms, hurricanes, erosion, and subsidence.

The USACE invites comments on the scope of the Draft Integrated Feasibility Report and Environmental Impact Statement. Scoping comments are requested to be sent by May 9, 2016. Go here for more information: Coastal Texas Feasibility Study

Jim Blackburn, noted Conservation attorney, stated, “[It is] clearly important that all groups and interests speak up. Input at this stage is essential from a legal standpoint as well as from a protection standpoint.”

“We need to really submit everything we have or we have missed a golden opportunity to protect and preserve the Texas Coast and avoid “Ike Dike” type projects,” said Brandt Mannchen, Houston Regional Group of the Sierra Club.
