Highway 87 – Raise it Up

The long-awaited highway project is finally underway. Officials from various State, County, and Local organizations, along with local residents, gathered to celebrate the ceremonial beginning of the Highway 87 elevation project. The groundbreaking was sponsored by the Bolivar Peninsula Chamber of Commerce at the intersection of Hwy 87 and 124. The BPCOC Vice-President, Anne Willis, began the ceremony with some opening remarks stating, “It has been a long time coming.” She welcomed everyone in attendance and thanked TxDOT for all of their hard work to make this project a reality. Commissioner Darrell Apffel also thanked TxDOT and commented, “This project will address a safety issue and meet the needs of the citizens.”

Hwy 87 will be raised an average of 2.5 feet from Rollover Pass to the High Island curve. And the intersection will be relocated to the north curve making it two-way. It is expected to be completed by the end of 2019. With golden shovels in hand, participants turned over the small pile of dirt signifying a start to the project.

State and County dignitaries and Chamber Board members signed two of the golden shovels and presented one to TxDOT and the other will be on display at the Chamber office.

After the ceremony, everyone was invited to lunch at Jose’s Cajun Restaurant.

Thank you to all involved in making our community safer and stronger than before. Looking forward to a fresh highway.

Praying modern technology will make this finally a longterm success. I know other longtime Bolivar lovers like us have seen so many promising projects conquered by our beautiful but so powerful Gulf. Hopes high!
