Rare VanZandt Birdie Skins Par 3 Field

By Mike VanZandtTuesday’s Par 3 contest got washed out when the thunderstorms hit shortly after the field teed off at 5:15 so the skins pot was doubled for Thursday’s event at the Ranch. On the 100 yard seventh hole, your golf writer hit a nifty little 9 iron about ten feet from the hole. After Michael Comeaux, Dabney Harrison, and Robin Giddens made their pars, Mike VanZandt approached his putt. The putt appeared to break to the left to the notoriously poor putting VanZandt, so he aimed about six inches right to play the imagined break. Instead of hitting it right, VanZandt yanked the putt to the left and watched as it broke the opposite direction of his read and wimped into the hole for a birdie. VanZandt’s lucky birdie ended up being the only one of the day and earned him $165. Comeaux edged VanZandt by one shot for low score of the day with a three over par 30. Shannon O’Brien shot 33. David Buchanan, Donald Mallett, and Johnny Crenshaw fired 34’s. Head golf pro Michael Mitchell and John Milby both finished with eight over par 35s. At ten over par 37 were Robin Giddens and Dabney Harrison. Rounding out the field with an 11 over par 38 was custom golf cart builder Bob Jackson. (6/26/14)
