Rita Moseley, Person of the Year

The Advisory Council of Bay Vue United Methodist Church named RITA MOSELEY as their PERSON OF THE YEAR for 2016. This group chooses one member, out of all the outstanding folk who attend Bay Vue UMC, as someone who has contributed the most to family, friends, church and community. Gary Huebel was the recipient for 2015. Rita Moseley richly deserves being the Person of the Year. Everyone who knows her, or works with her, loves this giving, caring and sharing woman. The definitions for good define all her actions. Rita is the first one to visit and provide food for those in need. She volunteers for most events that help the Bolivar Community. She loves and supports her family in their endeavors, and works tirelessly for her church family.

Good: fine, superior, virtuous, goodness.
Best: top, finest, flower, highest quality, jewel in the crown.

Her fine husband Charles Moseley shared information about Rita from when they lived in Houston, Texas. Charles returned from a working trip to find his kitchen filled with children. They were giving their orders to Rita who was providing them all with breakfast. It seems that some of the moms in the neighborhood didn’t rise early enough to fix a meal for their kids before school. Rita didn’t want them to head off for a day of study without a healthy breakfast. She cooked up whatever they wanted. Charles stated that he felt the neighbors ought to feed their own progeny, but Rita just kept on cooking.

This fabulous chef still generously feeds her family and friends. Everyone wants a “Rita Recipe”, although they never taste quite as good as when Rita cooks. Even if it isn’t her turn to provide food after Sunday Church, she usually brings something just in case there isn’t enough.

Rita visits the sick. Rita sets up carpools to take those who must make trips to doctors in Galveston. Rita compliments people on their achievements. Rita thanks others for their contributions. Yet, she is always humble. This beautiful lady, who does so much, thinks that she doesn’t do very much. (Rita is also quite a hit on the ukulele.)

Rita certainly fits not only the definition of good, but the superlative definition of best. She is the top, finest, flower, highest quality and jewel in the crown. Rita Moseley is THE PERSON OF THE YEAR!

Decades ago, on one of my many drives up and down the peninsula looking for great wildflowers to photograph, I happened down Crystal Beach Dr. and my eyes almost popped out of my head. It was like looking at a mini-botanical garden. I parked, got out and wandered around hoping the magical gardener was out working amid all those incredible flowers. No such luck. No one home. I left a note on the porch. Long story short, Rita called, I went back and met one of the most generous, liveliest, friendliest and most green-thumb-ist person whose flowers appeared in my old Houston Chronicle column & now the Lazy Gardener & Friends Garden Newsletter more often than even I can count! Latest example of her generosity: I was scheduled to speak at the Galveston Home & Garden Show. I had picked bouquets of firespikes to take. Morning of the show, they were all hanging down like limp noodles. Panic call to Rita, can I cut some of her flowers to take? SURE! she said. She’s a true lifesaver and I can’t think of anyone more deserving of “Person of the Year”!
