A popular fishing destination attracting anglers from all over the world since the 1950’s is slowly going away. In 2009, the State Legislature authorized the closure of Rollover Pass, citing erosion and safety concerns. The Gilchrist Community Association, led by President Ted Vega, resisted the state’s efforts through numerous court battles over the years, but eventually lost out. Although, according to Vega, one case is still pending awaiting a “final judgement.” In September 2019, the Texas General Land Office awarded the contract, and work began soon after.
A large part of Rollover Pass on the south side of the highway is already filled in, and the waters on the north side of the highway are almost completely pumped out. On Monday, Texas Parks & Wildlife personnel were netting through the remaining pool of water on the north side to rescue any trapped fish that remained.
Dammed on both ends, huge mounds of dirt are piled up on both sides waiting to be pushed in to the 200 foot wide trench.
