The Annual Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Golf Tournament was held on Saturday. Every year, this tournament funds scholarships for deserving high school graduates in our community. After an early morning shower, the skies cleared for a great day of golf. The team selection and Calcutta auction were held on Friday night at the Ship’s Wheel. And several donated items went to their lucky bidders in a live auction.
The eight teams teed it up for the 9am shotgun start. Again this year, any golfer skilled and lucky enough to score a hole-in-one on #3 would win $10,000. I suppose this prize will roll over to next year, as it is still unclaimed. As the teams played, Big Daddy Larry grilled sausage and boudin, and Island Liquor donated a huge pot of gumbo to satisfy appetites. And for the umpteenth year, Gray and Terri Hays motored around in the beverage cart serving their signature Bloody Marys and cold beer.
When the final scores were tallied, there was a three-way tie at 8-under par. To determine a winner, the tied teams competed in a 100-yard shootout. The spectators cheered for each shot.
