Sticker Shock

Georgia's Sand BucketBy Georgia Osten
Lately, several houses have gone up for sale in my neighborhood or adjoining neighborhoods. I’m intrigued. Lately, one of the newly completed houses had an open house. I usually don’t wait to snoop the new houses. I’ll venture over, go up the stairs and peep in the windows if the door is locked. This recently built house was adorable. I’ve met the realtor, who is new to Crystal Beach, he and his wife are very knowledgeable, friendly and patient. Anyway, the price of the house threw me, $499K. But, as I said, it was adorable. The house sold in two days for MORE than the asking price! Unbelievable!

Then, just up the street from me, the cutest little one bedroom one bath went on the market. It does sit on two lots. I asked the realtor, same realtor, to show it to me, I’ve always been curious about the layout, we knew the original owners. Cutest Little thing. Asking $250K, it sold two hours after I went over there to see it – For MORE than asking price. You’ve got to be kidding me!

We have this old derelict house, not even a survivor, sitting in front of us. My husband has been mowing it since Ike. The owner never comes down anymore. We’ve approached him too many times to count if he would sell it to us. Two lots, but the house needs to come down at this point. I shutter to think what it’s worth now. Way back when, we probably would’ve paid a whole lot less for it. We have to look at it, but at least it’s the Not so Ugly side of the house and when all the yards are mowed, it’s not too bad a view. It hides the little rent house we used to manage for our friend, Anna. Speaking of her house, she sold it recently for more than asking.

Whew, I can only imagine what we might get for this house, but where would we go? This is home, and Home is Where the Dog Is!
