Stranded dolphin rescued

Birdie is a juvenile bottlenose dolphin that was found Thursday morning at about 3:30 AM by Sheriff Falcon in Bolivar. She is named in his honor for his quick action that saved her life. She is estimated to be between three and five years old and is being cared for by the Texas Marine mammal stranding network, or TMMSN. Matt and I are part of the volunteer network that assists with on-beach dolphin recovery, and during rehabilitation. During our four-hour shift, Birdie was relaxed and swimming slowly. Occasionally she played with her brush, Green pool noodle and once she played with an Orange frisby. She is doing well at this time, swimming on her own but not eating well.

There are many levels of volunteering, such as teaching, working at festivals in the booth, working at beach site, working in neocropsie, working poolside and with experience and training, in the pool assisting the mammal as needed. Shifts are done 24 hours for entire stay of the mammal. Classes are held each year in Galveston if anyone would like to become a volunteer. It is a very rewarding experience. 1. She is in need of everything; posted by Bobby White. I can’t begin to imagine what all that could mean. I understand that volunteers are needed, but what else could we do to help? I understand that MONEY is very important but could we donate needed items? And how would we even know what to donate? I’m sure that there are others like myself that want to help, but due to disabilities or handicaps, are unable. So my question is: what can WE do to help?

Update on Birdie, I just finished my morning shift. Birdie is doing so much better today. She ate her breakfast of dead fish so we were all very excited. She is still not interested in live fish or shrimp but hopefully that will be next!! Birdie is being cared for 24/7 by specially trained volunteers. There are only 2 employees with TMMSN! All others are volunteers from all walks of life! This is a grant funded project and TMMSN is in need of sponsors to support the facility. I am asking the wonderful people of Bolivar Penninilur to consider supporting Birdie…. She was found not far from the Bird Sancuary. We are in need of everything!! Please help if you can!! Merry Christmas….. From my heart to yours
