“It is the biggest challenge and the biggest adventure.”
A group of travelers are making their way across the country through the deep south of the United States, from Murrieta, California to Weirsdale, Florida. The travelers are humans and horses, too! That’s right. They’ll be driving carriages and riding horseback for about 20-25 miles per day. They began their journey in November and plan to reach their destination in March. And one “stop” along the way was…none other than…Bolivar Peninsula. Michael Muir, from California, and Gerard Paagman, from British Columbia lead this great adventure ride. Their Friesian horses were flown over from Friesland, Holland. All are experienced in sport competition and stunt work for movies such as the Hunger Games: Catching Fire. But new to the idea of long distance travel.
Gerard is an adventurist and was even the first in history to drive the Olympic Torch with horses over a frozen lake for the Olympic Games in Canada years ago. This is just another check mark on his Bucket List…to see the United States in a new light. “Visiting your beautiful country, crossing your beautiful country at a very low speed, meeting beautiful people as they open their gates to us, share, invite us in…it changes your whole perception of the world.” Gerard is very pleased and thankful to enjoy such a trip across the South.
The travelers have had many join the ride along the way. Sometimes people join for a few days or a few weeks. They come and go. But they’re always met with welcoming kindness. There is a documentary about The Caravan set to release in September.
