The Luck of the Irish

By Linda Elissalde
‘Twas the luck of the Irish when he spotted her across a crowded dance floor. He headed right over and invited her to dance. That moment led to Ellie and Tom getting married two years later in Burlington, VT at 4:00 PM on August 31, 1968. Ellie and Tom (Sandy) Pollard celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Crystal Beach, TX at 4:00 PM on August 31, 2018. This rollicking party included daughter Brigid and son Angus, grandchildren, more family and friends from near and far. One group came all the way from Massachusetts, but not to worry there was plenty of food and drink for all. The surprise appearance of Wylde Meade added scintillating Irish music to the festivities.

Tom, a Mason, and Ellie settled in several places with his work. They spent time in Port Arthur and fell in love with the Texas Gulf Coast. The Pollards headed north again. Tom went away on a job; Ellie bought up two beach lots. It was a lucky day for our community when Tom retired 10 years ago, and the Pollards settled in Crystal Beach. Naturally, their cottage is Emerald green.

Tom and Ellie were asked what helped make this happy marriage of 50 years. They agreed that there are no set patterns, but patience, love, being active and commitment were important and, on yes, luck. This delightful couple certainly created their own good luck, but maybe they also had just a bit of, “The Luck of the Irish!”
