The Times They are a Changin’

I married into this huge family over 40 years ago. It seems like we’ve all been together forever, sharing in each other’s lives for decades. We’ve lived near one another off and on for that entire time. Two of my sisters-in-law have lived here at the beach since before Ike, caring for their parents. Mama died before Ike and Bop died a few months after the storm. Their house was lost in the storm. In the last 2-3 years, the Sisters lived in a house on the beach purchased by Liz’s son as a replacement retreat for the entire family.

Bittersweet as it is, Annie will be leaving for California tomorrow to live near her only child. What a wonderful, scary, and exciting adventure it will be for her. She already has an apartment on the third floor, her car will be picked up to be shipped tomorrow and Itty and Annie will jump on Southwest bright and early. It’s the end of an era and the beginning of another.

When the house sells, my other Sis-in-law will move to the Dallas area to be near the triplets and three other grandchildren. We’ll be wishing Liz a fond farewell at that time. We have some amazing friends here at the beach, but nothing can take the place of family.

Annie, here’s wishing you all things wonderful, we’ll be out soon to visit. You’ll always have a bed here at our Casa, plenty of ice and night-long marathons of Friends – Hold Me Close Young Tony Danza.

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
