These days…

Brenda Cannon HenleyBy Brenda Cannon Henley
Early this morning, I was digesting the news releases and announcements that had come to my phone and Macbook during the hours I had slept. Because I have been in the newspaper world for many years, I have accumulated many good sources for reputable news and a few that I most often disregard. I also have a band of writers that I trust explicitly (and a few I do not choose to quote).

One thing we pretty much all agree on is that we have never lived through days like these. Early last evening, I started getting pressers stating that the President had extended the National Distancing Guidelines through April 30, based on the advice of his medical team and military leaders across the nation. Governors and mayors are toughening up their stay at home and safer at home orders. Beaches and other places of gathering have been closed.

More information comes to us every day, and if you now do not know someone deeply affected by the COVID 19 strain of the Corona virus, you are the exception and not the rule.

As I was praying earnestly about what I would write, my phone let me know I had new messages. The first I read was from a precious Florida friend who has been on the front lines of this fight since day one. Tina Minnick works with the elderly, is an author, wife and mother, and is a special needs Sunday school teacher. She lived part of her life in Texas and her heart is as big as our state. She wrote, “I’ve been looking through old journals and Bible notes again. I came across notes that I think are great for right now. They are from 2007.”

  1. No one and nothing (insert what you choose here) will ever be able to pluck a saved person out of the hand of Christ. He will NEVER EVER leave or forsake us. Have you trusted Him today? Do you have peace in your heart even during this troubling and often frightening days?
  2. God encourages us all the way through life and can use each of us to encourage someone else through the trials of life. And, believe me, the opportunities are rich right now on every hand.
  3. God meets our needs during the trials. He doesn’t disappear during our problems. When we draw closer to our great big God, our problems seem much smaller. When we lose our way and focus on how big our problems are, we begin to think they are too big for God. Absolutely nothing is too hard for God. He is greater than any problems or situation we face. He rules over them all. Even if he doesn’t take them away, he will be with us through them and help us get through them. Remember that we have a giant sized God that can handle ALL giant sized problems.

We may need to remind ourselves of these truths in the coming days and weeks. God has used this virus to get the attention of many people. Please be wise, as safe as possible, and helpful within reason. God bless us all, and remember, these days did come as a surprise to God.
