Time Goes By

This past Saturday, December 12th, Robbie and I celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary. Many “things” are celebrating their 50th this year, from Charlie Brown to Southern Living. My Mom and Dad celebrated their 50th in April, 1981, and my Mom threw a fit that my sister and I wanted to have a party for them. When they married, they didn’t have a wedding cake, so we did a two tiered cake. They didn’t have flowers, so we did lots of flowers. Mom’s “funny” about her wedding day was, “Should I wear my New Dress, my Blue Dress, or the Dress I Wore Last?” You see, they were all the same dress. Their anniversary party was a very casual event – Mom and Dad were casual folks. We had the party at their home in the backyard. All their friends brought covered dishes. Dad wore his Sunday best blue coveralls and the female members of the family were in blue and white.

Daddy so loved a party and Momma tried to have fun, but that was difficult, as all the attention was on them. A lot of pictures were taken. I found out that I could write to the White House and have the President send them an Anniversary card. It was signed by Ronald Reagan. I had it framed and presented to them. My Dad looked at it and said, “How the hell did he know if I voted for him?” You see my Dad had never voted Republican before that election, always Democratic. Do you see where I’m going with this story? WE did not vote for the person who signed our card.

You can never tell where life will take you or lead you. For years after their party, Mom was so glad she had those memories. Daddy died on July 11, 1981, just a few months after the party. Hopefully, Robbie and I are starting a new adventure for our next 50 years traveling the USA. And, hopefully, I will find time to tell you more stories along the way.
