Wading through deep waters

Brenda Cannon HenleyBy Brenda Cannon Henley
No doubt about it, we are living in turbulent times. There is unrest on many fronts – In our families, in our homes, in our communities, and in our nation. If we do not remain focused and alert, the worst unrest of all is in our own heart and mind. How can we keep calm and create within ourselves a peaceful environment in which to function? How do we keep anxiety and frustration, leading to depression, at bay? Are we able to be honest about our insecurities and fears? Are we making a valiant attempt to appear strong for others, while inwardly struggling for the next answer?

The reason these thoughts were bombarding my heart and mind is that in the space of four days, I, personally, received word of three suicides committed by folks that looked perfectly normal on the outside. The ages ranged from a beautiful, young, 30-year-old to a man I had worked with on projects and committees in his late 60s.

Friends were shocked, families were left grieving, and questions remained unanswered. What had gone wrong? What had we missed? Was there anything anything we could have done differently?

Experts tell us that the extreme isolation, loss of social interaction, fear of health issues, and other matters related to COVID – 19 is a huge culprit. Studies are being done on this premise to determine just much effect this virus has had on humanity, even when not physically ill from the germs.

Pondering and praying over the news of three friends being so disturbed that taking their life was their best answer to the problems they faced, I wept. After a time of grieving, I sought help from the Bible, my go to book for anxious and troublesome times.

Colossians 3:15 spoke to my heart. “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also you are called in one body, and be ye thankful.”

We must choose faith over fear. We must keep our eyes on the prize. God’s promises are true and real, and we must remember that fact.

Find things to be thankful for, even the small ones. Dwell on the good. Focus on what you can do and not what you seemingly cannot do. God is faithful and worthy of our praise.
