Waffle House

One of the fun things about missing mass on a Saturday evening here at home, is going to Winnie for 7am mass on Sunday, leaving the house at 6:15am. What? Doesn’t sound like fun to you? Sorry for being a little silly … contrary to my usually serious Sand Buckets. The highlight of my trip to Winnie for mass early on a Sunday morning is not only the fact that I love the priest, Father Stephen, but also the anticipation of having breakfast in Winnie at the Waffle House!

The Waffle House is not for dummies, not just anyone can work at a Waffle House. And, they’re so friendly, someone always greets you as you walk in the door no matter how busy they are. When you leave, they tell you good bye and “see you next time.” We always like to sit at the counter, facing the action!

They have their own lingo for calling in orders, it’s called the “pull/drop/mark system.” My husband always orders eggs and sausage and hashbrowns. I always order a pecan waffle. The Sales Associate will stand “on the mark” when they call your order to the cook. That’s a position where the cook should hear everything clearly. Only one associate can be on the mark at a time. He (or she) will announce the Pull first – one sausage (that’s 2). The Drop – One hashbrown in a ring (or you can have your hashbrowns scattered.) Then, Mark Order Scrambled Plate (“Order” means 2 eggs, “Plate” means with hashbrowns).

Now, for my breakfast: The Pull – one bacon crispy (that’s 3 slices of bacon). Then, Mark Order Waffle Pecan (no “Plate,” so that means no hashbrowns). They always call the Waffle order last. It’s fascinating I tell you, entertaining and the pecan waffles are to die for!!

The other highlight of my Sunday, after waking up at the crack of dawn, is the lovely leisurely nap later that afternoon.
Sweet dreams!

    Dear Georgia,

I share you love of Waffle House or Waffle Houses. My favorite breakfast food is waffles. Actually, waffles are one of my favorite anytime foods. My family enjoyed homemade waffles with fried pork chops on cold winter nights.

My dad, Charlie Schmucker and I dined at all of the Waffle Houses in Beaumont, Texas. Those were special times and provide special memories.

    Waffle House, you rock!
