“Well done, thou good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21)

By Linda Elissalde
Each year Bay Vue United Methodist Church (UMC) bestows a Person of the Year award to an individual who best exemplifies the Christian spirit of cheerful giving to others. However, two people were tapped to receive this appreciation award for 2021. Elaine Rollfing and George Strong’s faith and help during 2020 and 2021 made them both recipients of gratitude and acknowledgement. Pastor Valerie Hudson presented the awards Sunday, February 20, 2022.

Elaine Rollfing and George Strong, Bay Vue UMC Persons of the Year

Elaine serves Bay Vue UMC as Advisory Council Chairperson, member of the United Methodist Women, and volunteers with Children’s Church. However, Elaine’s contributions to her family, community and church far exceed any titles. She has joyfully cooked, sewed, donated, assisted church members, and countless others. Her ability to take care of a Sunday Service is extraordinary, and Elaine is one of the first to be called in times of travail. Need something sewed? Call Elaine. Need a party organized? call Elaine. Need someone to be a part of a church play? call Elaine. Her lovely alto voice commands the stage as she proclaims her love and faith in God. It must be noted that one of folk’s highest delights is to receive a homemade from scratch cake created by this sweet lady. (I can attest to that from personal experience. YUM!) She is strong, but also very humble. Elaine lives her faith and makes an individual feel stronger by being in her presence.

George Strong, long time member of Bay Vue UMC, has held many positions of leadership including Chairperson of Advisory Council, Finance Chair, Lay Leader, volunteer for Children’s Church, and Head of United Methodist Men. He is also in charge of the Men’s Prayer Breakfast that will start again in the future. George coordinates ushers for Sunday Services and special church events. His thespian abilities are well known. George starred in all Jane Long Festival productions and Way Off Broadway presentations for Bay Vue Dinner Theater Shows. His generosity and community volunteerism in myriad capacities resulted in his being the Chamber of Commerce 2018 Citizen of the Year. There is no better greeter at any event than George Strong. Sunday Congregants know that the service officially starts when George shouts, out “Good Morning, Church”, and everyone responds with, “Good Morning, George!”

Thank you, Elaine Rollfing and George Strong. You two definitely have gone the Biblical, “extra mile,” and are most deserving of Bay Vue UMC’s Person of the Year award. Well done, thou good and faithful servants!
