This world has so much going on in these days that folks are feeling confused, embattled, and fearful. Many are asking the question, “What am I do?” “Which way am I to go?” “What might happen to me, or to my family?” The most honest answer is that no one knows for certain exactly what will unfold for any of us. A Christian in the right relationship with God can know that whatever God allows to happen, he or she will be able to trust and rely on the promises of God.
One of my favorite verses in Scripture is Psalm 56:3. It is a short verse and one I have taught many times to boys and girls and adults. It is only ten words, but it has tons of meaning. In children’s ministry, I often bought a pair kitchen latex gloves and wrote the ten words of Scripture on each of the fingers. It is a sure way to get people to commit the words to memory.
“What time I am afraid, I will trust in Thee.”
You might be shaking your head and thinking, “This isn’t for me. I am not afraid of anything.” Or, “This is too elementary. I need something more advanced to help me.”
Actually, I have discovered that simplicity is beautiful, readily available, and easy to remember when our hearts are heavy, burdened, or breaking. And, I know for certain that people of all ages do worry, fret, and sometimes feel overloaded.
Are you on your way to M D Anderson, or another hospital today, waiting for a test result to come back, listening for a call from the attorney, looking for work, or trying to balance a daunting budget? Is a loved one ill, a relationship broken, bills unpaid, vehicle on the blink, or a child disappointed in you? Do you need groceries in the pantry, ideas to complete an important project, or a friend with an honest, listening ear?
Then, this verse is for you, and for me. “What time I am afraid, I will trust in Thee.”
The Lord is with us to listen and love, guard and guide, strengthen and stabilize, prepare and protect, and encourage and enlighten. We simply need to trust Him with our worries and wondering.
