Works of Mercy

lunch_00Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy (Matthew 5:7).
Great works of mercy are seen and heard here on the peninsula through the work of the many volunteers who serve others through Second Going Resale Shop and the Food Truck or Food Pantry distribution. Bay Vue United Methodist Church hosted an Appreciation Luncheon on February 7th in the Fellowship Hall to honor their volunteers who help or have helped. Over 50 volunteers were served a special meal prepared by church members Tom and Sara Kruft, as Fran Griffin, the Site Coordinator for Second Going, sincerely thanked everyone for their time in serving the peninsula. Proceeds from Second Going fund the weekly food truck provided by Galveston County Food Bank. This truck brings meats, fruits, and vegetables each week to the Peninsula, serving High Island, Gilchrist, Crystal Beach, and Port Bolivar. “In January, an average of 236 families were served each week,” said Fran, “we are so fortunate we have so many volunteers.”

Alex Taylor, Business Operations Manager for the Galveston County Food Bank also praised the volunteer effort, while sharing some of the statistics that illustrate how committed people are to serving those less fortunate. In 2016, the Galveston County Food Bank distributed 6.8 million pounds of food, and recorded over 42,000 volunteer hours. Almost 700,000 pounds of food came from the Food Bank to the Peninsula last year, making that 10% of the total distribution. “When you look at the number of people on the Peninsula, the number of those who are in need, and the number that we are able to serve, Bolivar Peninsula is the only part of Galveston County where we come close to meeting the need,” said Alex, “which is fantastic! That’s how much work you all do here.”

The Food Pantry is still located at Second Going, but will soon be relocated to Crystal Beach Community Church. Weekly food service will not be interrupted.
