You know when you’re not welcome

Well, let me put that another way. You know when you’re not necessary. That brings a smile to my heart, because it reminds me of a very special person in all our lives, who at the age of 2, maybe 3, told me “Grandma, yes necessary.” This statement came after I, being the disciplinarian always, reprimanded her for something – “Emma, that’s not necessary.” She’ll soon be turning 18 in May, graduating from high school and is already accepted into Baylor.

With graduation comes Prom. Their Prom happens to be at Moody Gardens, just a hop, skip and a jump away from our good ‘ol stomping grounds.

One evening as PawPaw and I sat around watching Wheel of Fortune or Family Feud, I began to receive texts from my oldest granddaughter. “Grandma, what are you doing April 29-30?” Really, I hadn’t thought about it, being only mid-February or so. The texting continued back and forth until we finally got to the meat of the matter. Emma wanted to have a graduation weekend here at the beach with 14 or 15 of her closest friends. Okay, I’ve been there done that. This is where I came after prom a few years ago.

The thing is, it won’t be necessary for me and PawPaw to hang around. So, we’re planning a getaway. The only catch is that the folks staying at the house are going to get to keep Maezy too. There will be chaperones – I say that loosely. The chaperones will be none other than my oldest daughter and her best friend. Holy Cow!

We’re excited – after all, that’s why we have this house. It’s for the family to enjoy whether we’re here or not. I know they’ll have a blast because whatever happens at the beach, stays at the beach. Their secret is safe with Maezy, she’ll never tell.

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you. Email: [email protected]
