Captain Bryan’s Fishing Report, 2-15-22

By Captain Bryan Brawner
We finally had the cold weather and fronts which have flushed out the bay with extremely low tides several times. As we approach the end of February, fishing action on speckled trout and reds should pick up with the warm up and higher tide levels. I prefer later in the day with incoming or higher tides this time of year for fishing out of the boat. Lots of the fish will be concentrated in marsh canal areas and entrances to marsh drains this time of year. Lighter color plastics seem to work better in early Spring along with my favorite pearl with red tail. Although Down South Plastics are usually my go to, Saltwater Assassins work better for me in the cooler weather. Also try the larger size gulp shrimp in 4”.

The last six years the bay system has been constantly trashed with excessive rains and fresh water runoff targeted to the bay. Hopefully it will hold off this year. Even when pickings for trout and reds get slim in the spring at times, there are lots of other opportunities out there especially if you are taking kids or inexperienced anglers.

Whiting are one of the best eating fish out there and can be caught starting now and during spring break times on reefs like Half Moon, Dollar, and Tom Tom. Whiting are also plentiful in the surf and San Luis Pass. Black drum and sheepshead are also roaming the oyster reefs in the bay in good numbers.

Little Hannas and Hannas are usually good for drum, whiting and sheepshead all spring.

Right now, Clear lake is reported to be slow but reds are being caught in Moses Lake.

I am making some needed website changes so my my websites will be down for a while. Just text or email.

For those that have taken my class, don’t forget to follow up before your next trip for up to date fishing information on East Bay. As conditions warm up, there will be some changes and concentrations of the remaining fish.

On the water class/seminars are one of the best investments you will make to further your success and knowledge of Galveston East Bay.

For an extra added value now we are offering classes run from the client’s boat where we download data into your GPS as we run the class throughout East Bay. Coordinates downloads on sd or mini sd chip included!

I have moved my boat to Lake Conroe and will be offering guided charters there starting this year after I get everything set up the way I want and become familiar with the specific fish patterns of the Lake. Lots of fun and action! I will also be offering limited on the water classes for Galveston East Bay until late spring.

I will continue with updated report content from myself and several other contributors for East Bay and for other areas of the bay system.

I grew up fishing lakes all over Texas and have over 30 years experience fishing for bass, crappie, and catfish. I also was a bass/crappie fishing guide on East Texas Lakes before I made the move to the Texas coast. As I move toward a new chapter in my passion for fishing, I am bringing my lifelong freshwater experience along with years as a saltwater charter captain to bring you a memorable, safe and enjoyable fishing adventure in the beautiful waters of Lake Conroe. Stay tuned for my grand opening and charter specials which will begin soon!
