Barrel Numbers Aid Emergency Response
You may have noticed new street signs along Hwy 87. The roads with beach access have a reflective number corresponding to the barrel number on the beach. This will make it easier for law enforcement and first responders to quickly locate emergency calls on the beach. Numbered trash barrels are placed every tenth of a mile along the beach from the Flats to Rollover. In case of emergencies, individuals in need can specify their location using the barrel number, ensuring a quicker response from authorities.
To further aid visibility, every fifth beach barrel boasts an elevated number. This feature becomes invaluable on bustling weekends when crowds can obscure the barrel locations, making it challenging to discern the numbers.
This initiative, courtesy of the Galveston County Road & Bridge Department, not only contributes to the safety of our community but also proves helpful for beach visitors unfamiliar with the area, providing an additional tool for locating family and friends.
