Jerry goes to church
by Brenda Cannon Henley

Debbie Valentine posted photos on Sunday of her beloved husband, Jerry Valentine, getting a wish that abundantly came true. He wanted badly to be able to attend the Church of Christ on the Bolivar Peninsula that he pastors. He had been unable to attend because of his ongoing battle with cancer. Debbie thanks William, Talissa, and Marcus Comeaux, and Bubba Nelson, for helping

Update on condition of our beloved Jerry Valentine by Brenda Cannon Henley

Our hearts were saddened on Saturday to learn that Pastor Jerry Valentine, who has been battling cancer for some months, fell in his home and hurt his chest area as he landed across or onto his recliner. He was rushed by ambulance to UTMB to be checked over concerning the fall.

Debbie and Jerry were originally told that he had abscesses in the stomach cavity, but that diagnosis was later changed to reflect that what was first thought to be abscesses was actually more tumors growing there and causing extreme pain.

Not only was Jerry in pain from the tumors and the fall in his home, his body

Meal Train for Debbie Valentine

Joni Harding has set up a meal train for the Valentines. Please help us get the message out to the community and your church members.

What is a meal train? There are times in our lives when friends and family ask, “What can I do to help out?” The answer is usually to help them with a meal. When many friends give a meal, this is a meal train. MealTrain.com is a free meal calendar tool that makes planning meals among a wide group easy and less stressful. A Story of Death and Taxes
by Don Poole

Update (Feb-08-2012): An attorney from Iowa has contacted the Galveston County Delinquent Attorney concerning Suzanne Grant. He knew her and will contact her family members to inform them of the proceeds that are awaiting their claim. The local attorney was told that the Iowa attorney learned of the Excess Funds from an Iowa newspaper. Congratulations to all who helped.

Everyone knows that there are two things that we cannot escape – death and taxes. This is a story about how both death and taxes are costing the surviving family members of a Crystal Beach owner more than $20,000.

On June 28, 2005, Erma Taylor sold Lot 13 of Cloon Subdivision Section 5 to Suzanne M. Grant of 5108 Huisache Drinve in Bellaire, Texas. The property, located at 847 Sea Spray Drive, had a house assessed for $ 96,440. Ms. Grant did not enjoy her beach home for very long, she died on July 13, 2008 at age 64.

While Ms. Grant was spared the ordeal of Hurricane Ike, the same cannot be said of her beach house. Probably destroyed by the storm, the lot was assessed as vacant property in 2009 by the…

George Throop is walking across America

George Throop is walking across America

As I sat across the table from George this morning, the first thought that came to mind was Forrest Gump: “From that day on, if I was going somewhere, I was running!” I even said that to him, he just smiled sweetly and kindly agreed with me. After leaving Houston last week, he walked to Beaumont where he met a gracious host who took him in for a day and a half. She told him he needed to see the Gulf Coast and brought him here to Crystal Beach. This is how we are so fortunate to have met this amazing person, George Throop.

George began his “Walk across America” in September 2009 to advocate and raise awareness for healthier lifestyles, suggesting that everyone walk at least 20 minutes a day. He began his trek…

New Church of Christ being built

New Church of Christ being built

While workers put in seven day a week labor to help get the new Church of Christ building completed on the Bolivar Peninsula, the beloved pastor, Jerry Valentine, and his precious family, including Debbie and Jerri, the daughter, are praying, along with many neighbors, friends and members of the church family.

No man on the peninsula is loved more than Jerry Valentine, in my humble opinion, and my own pastor, Dennis Allen, of First Baptist Church of Port Bolivar, refers to Brother Valentine as “the spiritual leader of Bolivar Peninsula.” Even those who never enter the doors of any church or claim any faith, feel that Jerry Valentine is their pastor. From a quick word of encouragement spoken

The Rock Man
by Anne Christian

Most people walking the beach are delighted to find pretty shells and sand polished beach glass. I, on the other hand, stop to inspect spiky fish bones, gnarly bits of wood and blobs of rock. It was one such rock, a treasure found in Crystal Beach, that gave birth to The Rock Man nearly six years ago. An unusual, yet familiar shape, I scooped it up and immediately saw the face of a weathered and wise man as his history raced through my imagination. It was only a head, but I knew right then I would search for, and reassemble, the rest of him. It took nearly three years of walking the same stretch of beach in front of The Seahoose, carefully inspecting all I came across that was particularly unusual or odd to find most of his parts. I say most, not all, as his evolution was interrupted by a formidable adversary, Ike, but what was not found I now know tells little of his story and is not missed.

Sometimes One is Enough

Contest Winners

One vote, one voice, one prayer, or one Raffle Ticket! During the Crab Festival last May my husband, Gary, and I bought a raffle ticket. It was for a good cause, The Garth House, a group that protects children in the mid county from child abuse. The tickets where expensive, $100 each. We bought one and listened to our friends tease us for spending that much for one chance. Well the ticket paid off and after selling tickets for 5 more months they finally had the drawing and our ticket was chosen out of 530 tickets. We are the proud owners of the bright yellow Jeep Wrangler that was on display. So sometimes all you need is one chance for something great to happen.
