Creepy Critters

By Georgia Osten
Not too many things or critters creep me out. I’m okay with spiders in the house, I think they eat other things. The occasional roach, the huge ones, unless they fly at me, are not too bad. I’m usually quick enough to go find the repellent and spray them to smithereens. The other night one of our friends left our house pretty late, and when she got home, she decided to relax on the sofa and watch some TV. All of a sudden, she heard the screaming. Yes, screaming. Now, I didn’t know mice scream … The little fella was stuck on a sticky strip. Not knowing what to do, too late to go down to the garbage, she decided to wrap him up and put him in the freezer, garbage day wasn’t for a couple of days. (I put a pet cockatiel in the freezer once. He died unexpectedly and I didn’t want to bury him for fear a cat would dig him up.)

Back to mice, before we left the city, it came to our attention that we had mice in the attic. I called the exterminator and he set four traps. I made sure we had the understanding that when we caught some mice, he would come back to get them. That evening, as I sat in my recliner and my golden retriever lying beside me, BAM, BAM, BAM, BAM!!! All four traps went off like clockwork. Ruby looked up at me and whined.

Geckos, are my worst nightmare! It seems we have one or two gecko sightings every other day. If my husband is within earshot, I’ll scream and he’ll come pick up the little guy and throw him outside. One time, he left the tail on the floor and it flopped around until he could come back to pick it up. The other night, I was probably half asleep, but I swear one landed on my hand in bed. I flicked it off, cursing enough to make my husband blush. All I can say Little Geckos, don’t come around me when my husband isn’t here, I’ll hunt you down with the bug spray and you’ll be swimming in the stuff. For goodness sake, don’t come around the kitchen sink near the garbage disposal … Certain Death!

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
