It seems I’m never lacking for a topic to write about. Be it something exciting, insane, traumatic or just plain chatter, there’s always something to talk about. Unfortunately, this week, I’ve lost another pet – a critter who has been close to my heart for over 7 years. My little Pearl Cockatiel, appropriately named “Pearl,” went to sleep on Friday night, not even 4 months after we lost our golden retriever, Ruby. Was she heartbroken? They were good friends, Ruby never laid a “gum” on her.
In the early years, before we actually lived at the beach, Pearl had her Sugar Land Home, her traveling home and her Beach House. She would come with us every weekend, without fail. Her first Beach House was crushed during Hurricane Ike, just like “our” first Beach House. We replaced hers (and ours) with a bigger and better one.
She was closest to me, she would ride around on my shoulder, she liked to take baths in the kitchen sink, she loved lettuce and grape treats and she liked to poop on my shoulder. She would compete with our conversations on the phone, trying to squawk louder. My husband threatened to teach her to fly on a one way trip to the beach. Ha! Ha! She would squawk loudly whenever anyone came to the house, announcing their arrival, the perfect “watch bird.”
Well girl, I have all your favorite treats. I just ordered a fresh batch from Amazon, I’ve cleaned your beautiful home, I even washed your cuddly snuggle that kept you warm. I wonder if anyone is getting a “Fine Feathered Friend” for Christmas?? Pearl would be delighted to share.
