Fishing Report & Tide Chart For Rollover Pass, TX June 25 – July 1, 2012

By Ed Snyder/Outdoors

Summary- The wet, weedy, and windy conditions for the first part of the week stalled the bite but turning tides soon cleaned the pass greatly improving the fishing action.  Speckled trout was still the #1 item for anglers, with reds, croaker, and flounder filling the void.

Speckled Trout- Excellent trout activity for night and day anglers working the cut and the surf with both live baits and artificial lures filling coolers with quality trout.  (Size and Limits- 15″ to 25″ for 10 specks with one 25 incher per day when added as part of the daily limit).

Redfish– Slow but active with some nice spot-tails to 32″ being caught.  (20″ to 28″ for 3 reds, with one over 28″ when tagged in addition to the 3 fish daily slot-limit).

Flounder-Picking up for bay side bulkhead anglers, bay waders, and night giggers.  (Limit- 14″ minimum for 5 flounder per day).

Black Drum- Plenty of drum activity for the keeper eaters with bulls to 38″.  REMEMBER- All drum under 14″ and over 30″  MUST be released.  NO TAGGING. (Limits- 5 per day at 15″ – 30″)

GAFF-TOP -SLOW with some nice runs of gaffs coming in at night.   Intracoastal canal best bet with squid best bait.  (Limits-14″ minimum no creel limit).

Sand/Gulf Trout – Slow within cut but active out in surf.  (No limits).

Whiting/Croaker– Some really great hand sized to man sized golden croaker catches hitting the coolers for those tasty fish fries with good Atlantic whiting hitting squid and cut-baits.  (No limits).

Crabbing -GREAT CRABBING for nice keeper sized blues- Families are having a ball with the crabs. Blue limits:  must be 5″ across caraspace (point to point). No creel limits.  But all sponge crabs (egged females) MUST BE RELEASED.  Stone Crabs- largest claw is kept ONLY if two are present.  Kept claw must be 2 ½”  from the knuckle.

Shark – Mostly small ankle nibbler tips hitting in surf with some 30″+ chompers every now and then being caught off 3rd bars- But JAWS hasn’t shown up as yet. (Limit: 1 at 24″).
