God sends what we need

Some of my regular readers will know that I recently came home to Texas on pretty much a whirlwind trip to celebrate the soon coming birth of my very first great grandchild. Time was short because of work schedules, travel logistics, and the very event for which we came. My talented granddaughter, Callie Grace Collins, with a little help from her mom, (my daughter, DeAnna Davis), planned and conducted a beautiful coed baby shower to welcome the baby daughter of cousins, Brendan and Amber Jones. Excitement was in the air and I would not have missed it for the world. Decorations were over the top including the several displays of color themed balloons, banners, food, and games.

It was so good to see old friends from all over the vast state of Texas, classmates (now grown and married) of my grands, church friends, neighbors, our readers, and I truly enjoyed the opportunity of meeting and making some new friends.

The very long 939 mile trip (one way) was made by vehicle because of erratic flight schedules and way too many cancellations at the airport recently. And, there were some business interests to be checked on as we drove back through Gulf Shores, Pensacola, Destin, Panama City Beach, and other small bergs and cities.

I had my own beautiful room at my daughter’s well appointed home in Groves, and I got to meet the newest member of the household. Bella Grey is a huge Sheepadoodle, and though I had seen photos, I had not quite comprehended her actual size. DeAnna and Jeff both cautioned Bella not to rush at me for fear she would knock me down, and quite honestly, she seemed to understand. Bella and I hit it off big and became fast friends.

That is not always the case with me and large animals. But, we bonded quickly, and Bella would seem to find me in any group and come to stand near me. She would find a way to snuggle up to me putting her head or one of her huge paws on my leg or arm. She literally seemed to comprehend conversations and to give her version of an answer.

We seemed to all be riding on a whirlwind with dinners, gatherings, some rest, and the social events for which we came. We squeezed in two games of bowling, laser tag, and other fun things at the arcade.

We also spent an afternoon at the Pompono Club in Port Neches. I had interviewed Mr. Hughes, the founder, in years past, and appreciated the fact that the private club is going strong after Mr. Hughes’ death.

Only one thing marred my trip and that was the sobering fact that I missed my husband, Ted, at every turn. He will be dead eight years in August, and we were visiting people and places he loved dearly. On Saturday evening, we all were very tired and eagerly agreed to going to our respective bedrooms to get some sleep. Because there were several guests, DeAnna took Bella to her bedroom and carefully closed the door. My bedroom was across the hall and I am certain I closed my door.

The house quickly quieted down and everyone fell asleep. After about 30-45 minutes, I awoke with a start and knew I was about to be very ill. I was diagnosed with late onset Crohn’s about two years ago and wondered if I was having a flair. I made my way to the nearest bathroom quietly several times and prayed that this sudden illness would pass.

I was sitting on the side of the bed and I sensed rather than saw the door slowly open. Bella Grey walked ever so slowly to me, sat down in front of me, and just watched me. After a bit, she put that big paw up on my leg and kind of urged me to lie down. I did and soon fell back to sleep. When I awoke the next morning, the first thing I saw was that pretty fluffy face. She looked as though she had not moved.

Long story short – Later, DeAnna came in and asked had I come to their room and brought Bella out with me. I had not and neither had anyone else. DeAnna had never known Bella to open the modern door closers. But, she had, at least twice.

Folks, I believe with all my heart that God sent Bella Grey to comfort me and to check on me in my sickness and moment of feeling alone. I believe He knows and cares about our every need and can use any of His vast creation to accomplish His purpose.

Boy, did I ever dislike leaving my new found buddy in Texas. And, I truly believe Bella hated to see us go.
