Holidays

Well, if you’re like me, you really enjoy a holiday. Even though I don’t have a really taxing job anymore and I only work 3 days a week, a day off is like Heaven! This is, after all, our first big holiday of the Summer, it marks the beginning of Summer. Long ago, when we had a little retail business here on the beach, Memorial Day meant big bucks again. It also meant it’s time to begin stashing away some dough for the slow season.

I enjoyed being on the beach all day Saturday with our 15 year old granddaughter and her friends, celebrating her birthday which actually occurred 2 weeks ago. Funny how she has this knack for dragging it out for 3-4 weeks. The beach was lively, but tame. We drove down into the Zoo on Sunday and didn’t happen to be shocked by anything going on – are we just getting used to it all?

Today is Memorial Day as I sit writing my Sand Bucket, I’ve just returned from the beach with my puppy, Maezy. Not a lot of opportunity for her to run free due to a bit too much traffic. She really doesn’t know what to think of the seaweed, I don’t think she remembers there’s water on the other side of it. I posted a picture on Facebook the other day of all the frolicking happening on the beach and as usual, I try to come up with something catchy to say. One comment back to me that truly sunk in – “have I considered what this holiday is all about and did I realize all the sacrifices made to defend our Country?”

As I listened to the bagpipes at the ceremony yesterday at Tiki, as I removed my visor and put my right hand on my heart, as the veterans fired off a 21-gun salute, I was brought to tears. Yes, we should all take out a moment of our time to realize what each Holiday really means – religious or patriotic, keep in mind that this is not just a day of hot dogs and watermelon, it’s a day of remembrance. It’s a day for remembering the men and women who died while protecting our Country and serving in the United States Armed Forces.

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
