It is a New Year with New Ideas!

By Cindy Srader
Every year vendors try to excite the public with bigger and better things we NEED. I can’t help but be drawn to shiny things. This month my articles will all be about new innovations in kitchens. In looking at what is new and exciting out there I found several things that you can incorporate in your beach home. I am fascinated by this very custom backsplash. It is custom because you can have the area painted any color you want and still be able to repaint it later if you wish. This backsplash is painted and then a piece of tempered glass is installed over it. No grout lines and it brings a pop of color to the kitchen. The cost of doing this is about the same as having glass tiles installed as a backsplash. Using this method will clean easily with Windex! This is a modern look but will fit in with any type of kitchen!

HOW TO”…Use “found” beach glass!….Have Fun!

To make this tray, go to your Home Depot or Lowes and find a couple of sheets of mounted white mosaic ceramic tiles. There are a lot of colors out there so just use your imagination. These wooden trays can be found at any hobby shop ready to be painted or you may already have a tray you want to use. One of the things that I purchase, lazy I think, is the all in one smooth grout that is premixed and is an adhesive also. Coat the bottom of the tray with the premixed adhesive/grout. The next thing you need to do is to remove several of the mosaic pieces from the backing in random places. Cut the mosaic tiles to fit the bottom of the tray. Lay the pieces of seaglass after the sheet is fit into the bottom. Tape off inside and top edges of the tray with masking tape. Using a spackling knife, apply fine white unsanded grout over all the tiles, filling in cracks and holes. Gently wipe surface with a damp tile sponge to remove excess grout and smooth grout lines. Rinse sponge and repeat. Continue rinsing and wiping until surface is clean and grout lines are flush with tiles. Regrout where necessary. Let dry 1 to 2 hours. Polish surface with a clean, dry cloth. After grout has set (this may take several days), apply grout sealer, following manufacturer’s instructions. (2014-01-07)
