It is a New Year with New Kitchen Ideas! (3)

By Cindy Clay Srader
This week I am combining a beautiful room and a how-to all rolled into one. This kitchen is very high end. You can tell by the appliances they used. What I want to point out to you is how this floor really is bold with the color. If you are trying to save some money in rebuilding or building your beach home, inexpensive wood can be found unfinished and when painted it looks wonderful. This floor beautifully grounds this room and is the focal point. I know, if it is wood why paint it? Well I am talking about inexpensive wood that would actually cost less than any tile you would want to install. We all know how expensive hardwood floors are, but if you shop Lumber Liquidators you will be able to get some inexpensive woods. There will be very little waste because you do not have to worry about any imperfections. I would suggest if you are going to try this that you get a wood that does not have any knots in it. After the floors are laid, they would have to be sanded. Before Ike we did our own floors and it actually was fun. There is a rental place on the way to Winnie that has the sanders and anything you may need. We did our floors twice and they were really nice. I ended up whitewashing my floors but these will be more durable and easy to change if you get tired of the color. The key is to roll on a primer before you paint so the floor does not just soak up the paint. A good quality oil based deck paint can be used and at least two or three coats will ensure that the floors last as long as you want. Any nicks and scrapes will just add to the character. If you want to go one step further you can use a sealer on top. Ask the expert at your paint store to tell you which would be best and non-yellowing. For you more ambitious souls, a pattern can be used. The picture here shows how they painted squares and stained the other squares for a very nice looking checkered board look. If you have the energy or if your builder will help, these floors will have every one you know saying “WOW” when they enter. Enjoy… please send pictures of your favorite projects. Beachy people are very talented and will tackle just about anything! (2014-01-28)
