Mitchell’s Fourth Putter in Four Weeks Headed to the Cut

By Mike VanZandt
John Milby birdied the tough first hole and David Buchanan birdied the easy third hole to win skins Tuesday and leave Shannon O’Brien skinless from the gold Par 3 tees despite an eight par-one double bogey 29 that captured low score. Mike VanZandt skulled a 6 iron to 30 feet and got up and down for the only par of the day on the 145 yard 4th hole and the day’s third skin. Comeaux and VanZandt both scattered 3 bogeys with 6 pars for three over par 30’s while John Milby finished in solo fourth place with a 31. David Buchanan and Head Golf Pro Mike Mitchell threw in 37’s to beat Dabney Harrison and Robin Gidden’s pair of 38’s and George Flores’ and Paul William’s 39’s. Milby, Buchanan and VanZandt took home $30 each while Shannon O’Brien’s 29 was worth a measly $10.

One of the best features of the 5:15 Tuesday-Thursday Par 3 contests is that you only have to play one hole well to make a little jingle. David Buchanan’s 37 with a birdie skin is a prime example. Buchanan had four bogeys, and three double bogeys to go with his birdie on number 3.

Mike Mitchell, whose golf woes have occasionally been mentioned in this blog, continues to struggle with his putter, switching weekly in search of a flat stick that will assist his sometimes solid iron play. His most recent switch, to an ancient Wilson blade similar to the legendary Titleist Bull’s Eye Putter, will doubtlessly end up in the cut with the Ping Pal putter that let him down so many times. Mitchell’s putting troubles provide another strong argument against closing Rollover Pass. If you pull a rusty golf club out of the cut instead of a flounder, you can bet it is one that Mitchell discarded on an outgoing tide. What would our head golf pro do without a place to discard the succession of golf clubs that have failed him?

Finally, Mike Mitchell’s cats destroyed the TV in the clubhouse. If anyone has a flat screen TV of any size that needs a new home, it’s donation would be greatly appreciated.
