Now Where Did I Put That?

By Cindy Clay Srader
If your beach house is like most, you never have enough storage. Here are some “found” spaces that can really help with those problems but also will add to the overall architectural look of your home. The area between your interior walls is approximately 4 inches. This space can be used in a number of ways one being extra storage in the bath. In the first picture this area was built out a little and lined with wood. By making use of the 16” two by fours that are already there you have the dividers built in. In this example the homeowner used a nice thick molding, the sort you may use on a fireplace or window sill. This will add to the depth of the cubby. By adding the board below and hooks this becomes not only a useful space but very attractive as well. In the second example using the same principal, you can add some book cases in an area where you do not have enough floor space. This book case can be built-in to an area on either side of a window or even in the dining are to show your china. With the bookcase example you can make it any size or dimension you may want. If you are going to do this job yourself, and choose to make the bookcase larger than the stud width, make sure you support the area by placing a board on the upper span and bookcase. These spaces are best if done on interior walls. If you are going to do anything that you are not sure of, make sure you hire a carpenter to help.

“HOW TO” …

Here is an easier project for a bargain find than last weeks. Basically this is a unique way to paint a “found” chest that will reflect the sea. What a fun thing to do and make use of that second hand piece of furniture you are using in your beach house. I really like this look and it can be transferred to many different pieces of furniture. This wave look is fun and will make your room stand out! The first thing is obvious! Get a chest! Look at your Sherwin Williams store and choose one of the colors of blue you like. There are many to pick from so try to match your blue to some linens in the room. You need to have a place to start. Once you have chosen your blue you can use all of the colors on the color strip to make sure the blues are coordinated. To make your circles use a foam paper plate or saucer to trace the right size for the piece you are painting. Notice on this chest how the circles do not line up but the peaks of the lower rows hit the middle of the bottom of the circle. Make sure you put at least two coats of paint on the chest. It will be easier to do this one color at a time. As far as knobs. I prefer the clear glass knobs that will go with anything. You can find these at any Home Improvement Store or on the internet. If the theme of your room is nautical, there are knobs on line that are sailboats, lighthouses, etc. Just have fun and Happy decorating!
