Patton Cemetery clean up

By Georgia Osten
The Patton Cemetery clean up, Round 1, happened this past Saturday. About 15 people gathered with their mowers, weed wackers, rakes, gloves and loppers to begin clearing all the brush around this historic old cemetery. Three visible graves are out there amongst the palmettos. Bobby Mistrot from the water slide came out with his bush hog and got us started and Tracey had chicken and sausage gumbo waiting for us when we were finished.

And the story goes, as told by a local resident, Zeb and Skeeter, long time residents of the Peninsula, would gather at the local watering hole just about every day with the rest of the locals, telling stories, and drinking a lot of Budweiser. Can you see where this story is going? Anyway, Zeb and Skeeter had a baby, and yes, they named him Little Bud. Sadly, Little Bud didn’t live but about 2 months.

Luke used to join the crowd for drinks, laughter and gossip. The conversation came around to the fact that it was Luke’s turn to pick up the tab for the evening. Luke, head down at the table, seemed to ignore the chatter, so old Zeb got up from the table and came around to Luke, pulled up his head and pronounced him “de-aaad.” So they laid Luke out on the pool table and drank another round in his honor. Old Luke is buried out there now too!
