Pearl Beach BBQ Cookoff a huge success

When Pearl Beach residents Don and Tanna Kimbro attended a charity cookoff in a neighboring subdivision some months ago, they said, “we need to do this!”. And they did. Don and Tanna assembled friends and neighbors and organized the First Annual Pearl Beach Charity BBQ Cookoff. Nineteen teams competed in the categories of ribs and brisket, and all proceeds were donated to charity. Folks from up and down the Peninsula stopped by to see the action, many stayed the entire day. The band rocked on, a group from New Braunfels, BJ and Backwater Band. BBQ was everywhere, sides were set out and drinks were flowing. Even Harlan “Bigfoot” Hatcher of Swamp People made a guest appearance, photographed with the kids and entertained young and old alike with his stories of alligator hunting. The children had their own special playground, while the bubble machine pumped out bubbles galore, there were treats and games and popcorn and candy.

Over $2700 was raised, with 50% donated to the Crystal Beach Volunteer Fire Department. The category winners chose the recipients for the remaining amount; Susan G. Komen for breast cancer research, and the Texas City FFA.
