Pinky is Back!

By Georgia Osten
Yes, it’s true! I wonder how many of you remember the story of Pinky. She’s the most lovely dolphin in the Gulf of Mexico. I saw her a long time ago. I was crossing the ferry, it was too hot to sit in the car, so I stood outside by the railing to stay cool. All of a sudden, she jumped beside the ferry in all her glory. There was this little boy, maybe 8 years old, standing next to me. I said, “did you see that pink dolphin?” He said, “sure, but ma’am, you were only seeing the reflection of the sun off her skin that made her look pink.”

Give me a break, I said to myself …I know I saw a pink dolphin. Then, all of a sudden, everybody on Facebook and even Yahoo news was talking about the Pink Dolphin Sighting!

She hasn’t been seen around here in many years. But now, she’s back! There’ve been sightings of her in the intracoastal and the bay.

Way back when, Pinky was said to be living in Louisiana in Lake Calcasieu. I read up on Pink Dolphins a bit only to find out they hang out with their Mom’s for the most part. Because they’re considered Special, their Mom takes care of them for the rest of their lives so they don’t get “picked on.” That’s a good thing. I couldn’t imagine letting my baby go swimming around the gulf unprotected. Being “different” isn’t a crime after all.

“Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you!”
