Sometimes, Less is Best

In an effort to simplify and de-clutter, I’ve found myself making almost daily trips to Second Going with my excess stuff. One of the projects I’ve taken on this year is to totally re-paint the inside of the house. This requires a lot of taking things off the walls, which forces a wipe-down of every single thing, which forces you to think whether you really

need to put it back up on the wall, whether all that stuff really needs to be stored back under the beds, and so on. Have you used it in the last 5 years … probably not, time to go.

This, of course, does not pertain to the Christmas tree which only gets pulled off the highest shelf in the garage once a year. It does, however, weigh a ton. As my husband struggled to grab it from the top shelf and began pulling it down to the floor, I remained behind him to help catch the tree or him, knowing we could have both been crushed to death, lying on the floor of the garage, possibly never to be discovered until the weather heats up again in May. All this drama (in my mind) is what prompted my husband to work on an all-day project yesterday, and that was to make ready a spot in an upstairs closet, a new home for the tree when it’s not Christmas.

We set the tree up Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, like probably 75% of Christmas believers do. I’ve so enjoyed the simplicity and beauty of our Christmas tree with nothing hung in it but the lights. We turn it on every morning and off again at bedtime. I’ve only begun to bring the boxes of ornaments down this morning. I decided to reach in to see if there were keepers or not, because I intend to take a lot of them to my favorite resale shop. The first box didn’t have many, just the most perfect ones representing each Grandchild.

You know what, that may be the only ones I’ll decorate with this year!

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
