St. Valentine’s Eve Double Bogey Massacre

By Mike VanZandt
Michael Comeaux scattered two bogies amongst seven pars for a two over 29 on the Turquoise Course on Valentine’s eve. Comeaux beat everyone in the field by at least two shots and was the only golfer besides Massena New York Class “A” PGA Pro Brent Smith without a double bogey on his card. Dabney Harrison led the double bogey parade with a whopping five, followed closely by David Buchanan and Robin Giddens with 4 double jewels each. The sandman, Wes Weisinger, whose scorecard often does not reflect his level of skill on the links, won most of the cash with two skin winning birdies to go with three double jacks. Shannon O’Brien, John Milby, Sweet Swinging Charley Brannan and Mike Mitchell had a brace of double whackers and Mike VanZandt added one more. The nine gougers who had at least one double bogey averaged an astounding 2.75 double bogeys each for nine holes. Hopefully when the temperature goes up, the scores will go down on the 3 p.m. Tuesday/Thursday Par 3 shootouts at the Ranch. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to the Godmother of Golf on the Peninsula, Julia Smith, who broke her arm Friday in a tumble.
